Wanna work in the lucrative SEO field? Want to be a SEO Expert ? Think you have what it takes to play with the big boys? Real SEO work is a lot more than just writing articles and “spamming” as most people seem to think. A real SEO ninja should have elite detective skills, know how to use Google (obviously) and be a quick learner and self-starter. Lets elaborate it in detail 
Elite Detective Skills
A true SEO expert is similar to a detective; they are always on the hunt for new and juicy link sources. They are “naturally nosey” and take pleasure in observing and analyzing the competition in depth. As a matter of fact, the majority of my juicy links were found by reverse engineering my competition. Good SEO’s are also very observant. For example, I was able to sniff out fake reviews posted on a review site by a competitor by looking at the dates (lots of reviews were made on the same day or within a few days of another). A SEO expert must be active in searching and checking all other competitors and keep himself/herself updated.
A SEO Expert Needs To Know How To Use Google
This may sound redundant but it’s amazing how many people actually don’t know how to find information by themselves. They will ask “How Do I Do This?” or “How Do I Do That?” Fact of the matter is that pretty much every question or technological or even SEO related question you may have has probably been answered by someone online already. Not sure how to fix your FTP permissions in order to install WordPress? Use Google! Not sure how your sites are being affected by the latest algorithm change? Use Google in order to ascertain the opinion of many SEO expert and use that information in order to draw your own conclusion.
College Degree Not Required
Do you need a degree from a traditional college or an online college in order to work in this field? Not really. A university degree is required obviously if you want to pursue a career as a doctor or lawyer but a college education is not necessarily a must in the SEO world. There is no degree program that specializes in SEO as of yet. Internet literacy and a track record is more impressive. You may end up having to do a lot of writing so a decent command of the English language would be helpful. Once you’re making the big bucks you could always outsource it for cheap. A lot of SEO expert keep themselves informed by participating on webmaster forums and keeping up to date on industry news and new algorithm changes by reading industry related blogs.

My views on what it takes to be an SEO expert is that it is mixed combination of experience alongwith years of practice. I guess with changing algorithms of search engines, nobody can remain an SEO expert for long time. Still the things you mentioned can take you very close to that.
